A Few Methods To Help Waterproof Your Home

Having water in your basement can be a real problem. The longer the water is in the basement the more damage that it can do, and the worse the problem becomes. It is important that you get the water out of the home as fast as possible. You also want to keep the water from getting in your house in the first place. There are a few ways that you can make your home more waterproof. Here are a few tips on how to waterproof your home.

Draining Patterns

If your home seems to have a lot of flooding issues, you may want to look at the draining pattern around your home. Check and see if the gutter spouts are allowing the water to travel at least a few feet away from the home. If the spouts are ejecting the water right at your foundation, that water could be leaking into the home through the foundation. You may want to create a berm that protects your home and allows water to drain away from your home. Anything that keeps the water from penetrating down through the soil near your foundation is going to help waterproof your home.

Dig down around your home and expose the entire foundation. You may have some major problems due to fracturing or cracking of your foundation. With the foundation exposed, inspect the foundation for major cracks.  If you locate major cracks you are first going to want to fill them with a good grout. Once the cracks are completely filled up you are going to want to seal the outside of your foundation with a polymer sealant. Repeat this process on the inside of your home. The sealant is going to help keep all the groundwater and rainwater out of your home.

Sump Pumps

One of the most effective ways to clear the water out of your home is by installing a sump pump. These pumps have switches that activate when they are put in water. The pump should be installed at the lowest point or the most susceptible spot in your basement. Often The pump will installed a few inches deeper than the concrete down into the ground to allow for early extraction of water. These pumps will switch on when there is water in the basement and pump the water from the basement to the outside of your home. Once again, you want to make sure that it is being pumped far enough away from the home that it does not drain back into the home.
